The Black Regulars, 1866-1898
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (January, 2003)
Authors: William A. Dobak and Thomas D. Phillips
Average review score:

A must for any military history library
The Black Regulars is an excellent book. Drs. Dobak and Phillips have told this story well, with truly exhaustive research that never suffers from what I call "academic" writing. It is lively and interesting from beginning to end. Along the way, they debunk an old myth that the black regulars were given the poorest equipment, garrisons, quarters, etc. They point out that in the post Civil War army, all soldiers suffered from the above difficulties. The lot of the black man was difficult, but the army did offer more equality. My only quibble is that the book ends with 1898. Perhaps we can look forward to black regulars from the Spanish American War to the present. I heartily recommend The Black Regulars.

A Superb Book
This complex, richly documented treatment of the activities, lives, and relationships of black soldiers in the West during the generation after the Civil War is the single best book on the subject. It is one of only three books on the frontier army singled out for recommendation on my website. ...

Breaking Silence Before
This is excellent resource for clergy & layman seeking a closser walk with the Lord.

Dr. Phillips years of study & personal experience culminate in a religious masterpiece that has been largely ignored by the mainstream press.

Get off the beaten path, march to a different drummer, and buy a copy to give as a gift to everyone you know.

The Bride's Best Man (Zebra Bouquet 54)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Bouquet (July, 2000)
Author: Laura Phillips

Real people - great story
Who hasn't known someone who decided it was past time to get married? Jack and Marcy have been best friends forever but not "like that". Marcy gets engaged to a perfectly pleasant man - who would do....Jack realizes that he loves his best friend. Since I married my best friend - I loved this "coming to realize" story - and found the characters to be real and fascinating.
A wonderful read - Thanks!

The Bride's Best Man
Marcy Winters is planning a wedding with the assistance of the man she adores. One small problem. The love of her life isn't the groom. Jack Rathert is her childhood friend, a buddy she shares her secrets with. This is the guy she goes to when she needs to get away from it all in a secluded fishing boat. Roger, the sophisticated one with polish and high-earning potential, is Marcy's fiancé. As Jack feels the sudden threat of losing Marcy, he acknowledges his real affection for the woman he never allowed himself to esteem as more than a companion and confidante. This awakening elicits the worst and best behavior in both. Humorous, touching, and full of sincerity at its most intimate moments, this story will make every reader see the so-called platonic friend in a different light. Though written in a lighthearted, entertaining manner, the novel explores deeper social issues with skill. Former Meteor author Laura Phillips delivers a beautiful romance for those who believe marriage is based on common interest, not gender-defining roles. Exceptional.

Bridge of Dreams
Published in Paperback by Hudson Hills Pr (01 November, 1999)
Authors: Burhan Dogancay, Phillip Lopate, and Burhan Doganay
Average review score:

Bridge of Dreams
The photographs in this book vividly capture a very unique period of the Brooklyn Bridge as it was being restored in the late 1980's. The use of black and white photography, together with the unusually decorated subject matter, namely the Brooklyn Bridge draped in safety nets, make for a visually stimulating combination.

Bridge of Dreams
One of a kind photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge as it has never been seen before, mysteriously draped in safety nets. A a real treat for the eye.

Can you find Jesus? : introducing your child to the gospel
Published in Unknown Binding by St. Anthony Messenger Press ; Novalis ; Cassell ()
Author: Phillip D. Gallery
Average review score:

Great family activity that you will enjoy over and over!
Great family activity book that offers new discovery and opportunities for discussion with every reading. Thoughtfully researched and written with beautiful illustrations. This is one of the treasures that your child will save to share with their own children.

A wonderful way to learn of Jesus' life.
For children, this is a super way to introduce Jesus' life and important events. It keeps their interest on every page as they must find important symbols of Christianity. As they look for the symbols many different things are discovered in the pictures to learn of what life was like when Jesus lived and how it can be compared to life today.

Average review score:

A truely fascinating read
for religious seekers, those curious about spiritual
matters, those interested in Florida's history and
any with a mind to understand religious communities,
this book is a MUST read. The varied articles are
revealing, stimulating, fascinating, well-written,
with marvellous footnotes and bibliography. Oh, if
all university, edited publications could be so good.
If this ever makes it to a reprint or paperback,
more varied and colour photos would just be the icing on the cake.

Censored 1998: The News That Didn't Make the News-The Year's Top 25 Censored News Stories (Annual)
Published in Paperback by Seven Stories Press (April, 1998)
Authors: Peter Phillips, Tom Tomorrow, and Project Censored
Average review score:

lifting the lid
A highly useful book that includes in its contents: unreported or underreported stories from the mainstream media; a guide to names, addresses and websites of the alternative press; essays and commentaries discussing aspects of the media; and a nifty little chart that traces interlocking corporate rtelationships between the media combines and their fat cat corporate pardners.

The stories themselves vary widely as could be expected. There is however, as Michael Parenti points out, a thread connecting the diversity. That common thread reveals a corporate drive to dominate the civic culture and suppress those stories that might otherwise hinder big money domination. Question - Does this subtext reflect the book's editorial bias as one out to get corporate capitalism, or does it reflect the power of these combines to get their media way on a national scale. You decide. The following are a brief sample of the suppressed stories of 1998.

Big outfits such as Weyerhauser, Coors, et. al., are combining to pressure individual states into passing laws preventing public disclosure or civil suits following upon violation of environmental laws. It works like this. The firm reports its violation to the state and in return receives immunity from prosecution and a sealing of official records from public view. No harm, no foul, and no Erin Brockoviches.

White-collar crime is hardly ever prosecuted by the Justice Dep't - the statistics are in. Of 52,000 criminal indictments in 1996, only 250 involved violations of OSHA laws protecting environment and worker health and safety. This in the face of about 60,000 estimated worker deaths yearly from exposure to toxins. And still business lobbies like NAM and US Chamber of Commerce discourage even this pitiful percentage.

As to that earlier question, I know how I would respond.

Free the Press!!!
Project Censored once again demonstrates how corporate media fails to report such important news stories to the general public. One only needs to compare the top ten junk food news stories to project censored's top ten news stories to see how the media has become an entertainment industry, concerned with ratings and buyers. It is shocking to see how the public can let such events happen without demanding reform. As always, I loved the cartoons by Tom Tomorrow. Great index of alternative news publications.

Cheers! the World of a "Wine-Osaur"
Published in Paperback by Camino Books (May, 1995)
Author: Phillip Silverstone
Average review score:

A very readable collection of articles about the wine-world.
Phill Silverstone's collection of articles, interviews and musings is immensely ejoyable and readable. It not intended as a text book, full of facts about wine and all its complications and diversities, but as an insight into the enjoyment which he has derived over a twenty year period involved with wine. His enthusiasm shines through and although I have never heard or seen his radio or television pieces it is entirely possible to imagine him being irreverent about a subject that gets too much reverence. I would recommend this to everybody.

Really Cool Guy!!
This is the best introduction to wine book I've ever read...it's really funny, totally irreverent and for an Englishman, Phillip is one cool dude.
